US President Donald Trump is considering his next move in the conflict with Iran as Washington issued fresh security warnings over the risk of an unexpected escalation across the Middle East.
The US State Department urged Americans in the region to remain highly vigilant, warning that the volatile security environment could lead to flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions. Americans outside the region were also advised to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East.
Trump abruptly cut short his weekend at Camp David and returned to the White House, adding to uncertainty over Washington’s next steps. He has said he is in “deciding mode” on Iran, with options ranging from further military action to economic pressure or a negotiated settlement.
Iran, meanwhile, warned that any major new attack by the US or its allies would trigger sustained retaliation against US bases and interests. Tehran also said countries supporting Washington could be treated as parties to the conflict.
The developments come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also shortened his US visit and returned to Israel.
Pakistan is preparing to highlight its diplomatic and mediatory role during the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to present Islamabad’s position on the evolving regional security situation, while stressing dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Pakistan’s UN ambassador said Islamabad would also emphasize its efforts to promote regional stability, uphold the UN Charter and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
