PM orders technical audit of Discos’ billing system

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a comprehensive technical audit of the billing systems of power distribution companies (Discos), reaffirming that power sector reform remains one of the government's top priorities.

 

Chairing a review meeting on Power Division affairs, the prime minister acknowledged improvements in Discos' performance but said much more work was needed to enhance efficiency and transparency across the sector.

 

Shehbaz directed the nationwide installation of smart meters, calling them essential for modernising the electricity sector. He also instructed authorities to enforce stricter oversight, eliminate electricity theft, and develop clear performance indicators with defined timelines for all Discos.

 

To promote accountability, the prime minister announced that the best-performing Disco would be formally recognised and rewarded, encouraging healthy competition among distribution companies.

 

Addressing rural electricity shortages, he directed the Power Division to develop village-level solarisation projects to reduce load-shedding and ease pressure on the national grid through decentralised renewable energy solutions.

 

In a separate meeting, the prime minister also directed improvements in services for overseas Pakistanis, including digitising document attestation, simplifying complaint mechanisms, and expanding digital consular services.
