Pakistan Waives Nepra Approval for Solar Systems Up to 25kW

Pakistan has removed a key regulatory requirement for small-scale rooftop solar installations by allowing electricity distribution companies (Discos) to directly approve grid-connected solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts (kW), eliminating the need for prior approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).

Under amendments to the Solar Regulations 2026, Nepra has authorised the relevant Discos to process and approve eligible rooftop solar applications, streamlining the approval process for households and small businesses.

With the revised framework, consumers installing solar systems with a generation capacity of up to 25kW will no longer be required to obtain separate regulatory approval from Nepra. Instead, applications will be handled directly by the respective power distribution company.

The move is expected to accelerate rooftop solar adoption by reducing regulatory delays, simplifying documentation requirements, and making grid connectivity more accessible for residential and small commercial consumers.
