An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff mission has arrived in Pakistan to begin discussions for the fourth review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the third review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), according to official sources.
The mission is expected to hold talks with Pakistani authorities over the next two weeks, assessing economic developments and programme performance through June 2026.
The discussions will cover Pakistan’s progress against agreed IMF targets, including structural benchmarks, tax reforms, fiscal measures and reforms in the power and gas sectors. Monetary and broader structural issues are also expected to be part of the review.
The IMF team is also expected to conduct discussions under the Article IV consultation, which involves a broader assessment of Pakistan’s economic and financial conditions.
The mission’s arrival follows earlier comments by Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani that discussions with the Fund were likely to begin on September 23. However, no official confirmation of the mission’s arrival had been issued by the Finance Ministry, State Bank of Pakistan or the IMF’s resident representative at the time of the report.
If Pakistan and IMF staff reach a staff-level agreement (SLA) on the two programme reviews, the agreement will then require approval from the IMF Executive Board.
Successful completion of the reviews could unlock approximately $1 billion under the EFF and $200 million under the RSF.
Pakistan has so far received around $4.8 billion under the two IMF arrangements.
