US vows ‘toughest sanctions in history’ on Iran

The United States is preparing to impose what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as the “toughest sanctions in history” on Iran, signaling a major escalation in Washington’s economic pressure on Tehran.

Bessent said the new measures could reduce the need for further large-scale military action, while indicating that more details would be announced on Monday.

The comments came after President Donald Trump warned of “economic warfare” and threatened consequences for countries providing Iran with any form of economic support.

Washington is also seeking cooperation from China in enforcing the sanctions. Beijing, however, has said that sanctions are not an effective way to resolve disputes.

Iran has condemned the planned measures, adding to tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The announcement could have significant implications for oil markets, global trade and regional energy security, particularly if the sanctions affect Iran’s ability to export crude or disrupt its trading relationships.
