Transporters’ Strike Leaves $500 Million Worth of Export Containers Stranded

The nationwide transporters’ strike, now in its fifth consecutive day, has left an estimated $500 million worth of export containers stranded at factories, according to the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA).

The disruption comes during the textile industry’s peak shipping season, just as Pakistan’s exports were beginning to regain momentum after a challenging period. Exporters warned that prolonged delays could damage the country’s reputation among international buyers.

PTEA cautioned that continued disruption could lead to higher demurrage and detention charges, missed shipping deadlines and potential penalties from foreign buyers, adding to the financial losses.

The association urged the federal government to immediately resolve the dispute and establish mechanisms to prioritise export cargo movement during future strikes or industrial disruptions.

PTEA also warned that repeated transport disruptions could weaken Pakistan’s export competitiveness and buyer relationships, putting future orders at risk.
