Ship recycling resumes at Gadani after an eight-year break as seven vessels arrive

Ship recycling operations have officially restarted at the Gadani Ship Breaking Yard after an eight-year pause, with seven vessels arriving for dismantling in a move expected to support Pakistan's maritime industry and industrial growth.

According to an official statement, the resumption of operations was made possible through coordinated efforts by the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), a member of the Maritime Task Force, along with other government institutions.

The government said it is introducing wide-ranging reforms to align Pakistan's ship recycling industry with international standards. It has also granted the sector formal industrial status to encourage investment and promote long-term sustainable development.

As part of the modernization initiative, Gadani's ship recycling infrastructure is being upgraded to meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.

Officials said nine of Gadani's 16 ship recycling yards have already been upgraded to comply with the Hong Kong Convention, while the remaining seven yards are currently undergoing inspection and certification.

The government also plans to establish a modern Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) facility at Gadani to ensure the environmentally safe management and disposal of hazardous waste generated during ship recycling activities.
