PM steps up efforts to privatise Discos

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate the privatisation of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), calling for stronger engagement with international investors and setting a one-month deadline to complete reforms within the Privatisation Commission.

During a review meeting, the prime minister instructed officials to adopt a comprehensive strategy to attract global investors and ensure the first phase of DISCO privatisation is carried out in line with international best practices while maximizing value for the government.

He also ordered the completion of the Privatisation Commission's institutional restructuring within a month, including the recruitment of internationally experienced professionals in finance, law, and information technology to strengthen the commission's capabilities.

Officials informed the meeting that investor roadshows held in Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and China had generated encouraging interest in the proposed privatisation of GEPCO, FESCO, and IESCO, the three distribution companies included in the first phase.

The prime minister further directed authorities to complete all legal, financial, and regulatory requirements on schedule, while ensuring consumer interests remain protected through effective grievance redressal mechanisms after privatisation.
