Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif became the first Pakistani prime minister to open a trading session at the London Stock Exchange (LSE), where he also formally inaugurated Pakistan’s $3 billion dual-tranche sovereign Eurobond.
Speaking at the LSE headquarters in London, Shehbaz said Pakistan’s improving macroeconomic indicators were creating stronger prospects for attracting foreign investment.
The ceremony was attended by London Stock Exchange Group CEO David Schwimmer, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Privatisation Adviser Mohammad Ali, Pakistan High Commissioner Tipu Usman and other Pakistani and British officials.
Earlier this month, Pakistan raised $3 billion through the dual-tranche Eurobond issuance, attracting nearly $6 billion in investor orders.
Shehbaz highlighted the government’s economic reform efforts, including the digitisation of the economy and the privatisation of state-owned enterprises. He said the government was pursuing the transfer of more state businesses to private-sector management.
The prime minister also discussed the impact of the Gulf crisis on Pakistan’s economy, saying the country was navigating the challenges while contributing to diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran.
He further called for greater engagement with international financial markets, saying Pakistan wanted to attract investment beyond sovereign debt, including through broader opportunities in the country’s economy.
Shehbaz also invited the LSE Group chief executive to visit Pakistan.
