Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sought greater support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to advance Pakistan's economic reform agenda, identifying the minerals sector as a key area for future collaboration.
During a meeting with a JICA delegation led by President Dr. Tanaka Akihiko, the prime minister said Pakistan aims to expand cooperation in economic reforms, mining, skills development, and the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Shehbaz highlighted the government's progress in stabilizing the economy and implementing structural reforms, noting that state revenues have doubled over the past three years. He also emphasized job creation through technical training, youth skills development, and women's economic empowerment.
The prime minister said strengthening cooperation between JICA and SMEDA could help enhance SME growth and boost exports, while expressing appreciation for Japan's longstanding partnership with Pakistan.
Dr. Akihiko reaffirmed JICA's commitment to expanding cooperation in healthcare, education, infrastructure, industrial development, and vocational training, adding that the agency would continue supporting Pakistan's development priorities at both the federal and provincial levels.
