Pakistan’s exports to the European Union have increased by 108% over the past decade under the bloc’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade arrangement, according to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI).
FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh said the preferential trade scheme has improved Pakistani exporters’ access to the EU market, with eligible products benefiting from zero or reduced tariff rates.
He said the export growth also creates opportunities for Pakistan to diversify its EU shipments beyond traditional textile products. However, exporters will need to prepare for evolving compliance requirements and changes to the GSP+ framework ahead of 2029.
Sheikh called for stronger government-industry coordination, particularly to help small and medium-sized businesses meet EU standards related to labour and human rights, environmental protection and governance.
He also proposed dedicated task forces, reduced bureaucratic hurdles and targeted incentives for textiles and other major export sectors to strengthen Pakistan’s position in the European market.
The GSP+ framework offers developing economies preferential access to the EU in exchange for commitments to international conventions on human rights, labour, environmental protection and good governance.
Sheikh said the transition period through December 2028 should be used to prepare businesses for tighter requirements. He warned that structural reforms, competitive energy costs and stronger support for exporters will be essential to maintaining market access and sustaining growth.
