Pakistan Urges Huawei to Establish R&D Centre

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has urged Huawei to consider establishing a research and development (R&D) centre in Pakistan as the country seeks to expand its role in global technology and IT-enabled services.

During a visit to Huawei’s Global Service Centre (GSC) in Islamabad, the minister was briefed on its operations and met Pakistani engineers and technology professionals working on global ICT services.

Khawaja said the centre demonstrated Pakistan’s potential to become a regional and global technology hub, with Pakistani professionals increasingly providing high-value digital services to international markets.

She highlighted the country’s young population and stressed the need to develop skilled human capital through stronger cooperation between the government, industry and academia.

The minister also welcomed Huawei’s commitment to train 300,000 young Pakistanis in ICT skills under a training partnership agreed during the prime minister’s visit to China. She encouraged the company to expand investment, knowledge transfer and mentoring opportunities in Pakistan.

Khawaja further called for greater participation of women in the technology sector and acknowledged the contribution of women engineers working at the centre.

Huawei Pakistan CEO Ethan Sun said the company remained committed to strengthening local technical expertise and creating opportunities for Pakistani professionals to participate in the global digital economy.

Huawei’s Islamabad centre provides remote technical support, network operations, service assurance and other advanced ICT services to international customers.
