Pakistan Moves Closer to Commercialising GM Maize

Pakistan has moved a step closer towards the commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) maize, with a government committee reaching a broad consensus on a framework that would allow GM and non-GM maize to coexist.

 

The committee, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, reviewed a proposed transition and implementation framework following consultations with industry stakeholders, technical experts and other relevant sectors.

 

Key concerns discussed included the transition timeline, continued availability of non-GM seeds, supply continuity and the prevention of unnecessary price increases. The committee stressed that the shift towards GM maize should take place gradually, allowing businesses and other stakeholders sufficient time to adapt.

 

Participants also called for clear safeguards and implementation guidelines while incorporating input from the seed industry, maize millers, academia and scientific experts.

 

The committee agreed to finalise a comprehensive framework and move the recommendations forward for implementation by the relevant authorities.
