Pakistan FDI Growth Faces Uncertain Outlook

Pakistan FDI Sees Short-Term Growth Amid Ongoing Uncertainty

Pakistan recorded a notable rise in foreign direct investment (FDI) in March 2026, with inflows reaching $167 million—up significantly from $63 million in the same month last year, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.

This sharp monthly increase suggests a temporary improvement in investor sentiment. However, the broader trend paints a more cautious picture.

Long-Term FDI Trend Remains Under Pressure

Despite the March uptick, total FDI inflows during July–March FY26 declined by approximately 27%, falling to $1.35 billion compared to $1.86 billion in the same period last year.

This ongoing weakness highlights persistent concerns among foreign investors, largely driven by macroeconomic instability and regional geopolitical uncertainty.

Tresmark Insight

According to Komal Mansoor, Head of Research at Tresmark:

“Recent outflows were primarily driven by foreign investors reducing exposure to higher-risk assets. While market sentiment has improved in the short term, long-term FDI trends indicate continued caution among investors.”

At Tresmark, we believe that while short-term inflows may respond to improving sentiment, sustainable FDI growth will depend on economic stability, policy consistency, and regional clarity.

Key Investment Sources

China and Hong Kong continued to dominate as the largest contributors to FDI during this period. Additional inflows were recorded from the UAE, Switzerland, the UK, and Japan—reflecting a concentrated but still active investor base.

What This Means for Investors
Short-term sentiment is improving
Long-term investor confidence remains fragile
Geopolitical developments will play a critical role
Policy direction and economic reforms remain key triggers

Conclusion

While March’s FDI surge offers a positive signal, it does not yet indicate a sustained recovery. Investors remain cautious, and future inflows will depend on both domestic stability and global market conditions.
