The Professional Accountants Forum, Pakistan (PAFO) has called on the Finance Ministry and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to publish the income tax and wealth directories of parliamentarians for tax years 2020 to 2025.
In a letter to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, PAFO President Muhammad Iqbal urged the government to direct the FBR to release the six pending directories, saying greater transparency could strengthen public confidence in the tax system and encourage voluntary compliance.
FBR’s publicly available tax-directory section currently lists the Parliamentarians’ Tax Directory for tax year 2019 as the latest such directory.
PAFO said the publication of parliamentarians’ tax information could encourage businesses and traders to meet their tax obligations, particularly as the government seeks to expand the tax base and address compliance gaps.
The forum also referred to the government’s efforts to bring businesses operating outside the formal tax system into the tax net. It cited reports that only 181 retailers had filed returns under the Aasaan Tax Scheme against an estimated potential base of 3.5 million retailers.
PAFO said the absence of parliamentarians’ tax directories after 2019 has contributed to what it described as a transparency and trust gap. The FBR had previously stated, when launching the 2019 directory, that a 2020 directory would also be published.
The forum further urged the FBR to use its digital and artificial-intelligence capabilities to improve transparency and demonstrate tax compliance at all levels.
PAFO recommended that the FBR immediately publish the Parliamentarian Income Tax and Wealth Directories for tax years 2020 through 2025, arguing that greater disclosure could support confidence in the tax system and voluntary compliance.
