‘Govt speeds up FBR reforms, cashless economy drive’

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government is accelerating reforms to strengthen Pakistan’s financial system through improvements in tax policy, enhanced efficiency at the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), promotion of a cashless economy, and greater use of modern technology.

 

Speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony of the FBR’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme at LUMS, Aurangzeb said the reforms aim to improve public convenience, restore taxpayers’ confidence, and establish a transparent system that supports sustainable economic growth.

 

He said the government is introducing a new operating model for the FBR to enhance transparency and efficiency, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is placing special emphasis on FBR reforms and the transition towards a cashless economy to document economic activity, broaden the tax base, and improve financial transparency.

 

The finance minister also revealed that the government has identified major cases of sales tax evasion, leading to higher tax collections and increased revenues for the national exchequer.

 

Highlighting the role of technology, Aurangzeb said modern digital systems, integrated data, and artificial intelligence (AI) are essential for effective tax administration. He urged FBR officers to embrace emerging technologies and continuously upgrade their skills to align the institution with global standards.

 

He added that restoring public trust in the FBR remains a key priority, with reforms aimed at improving the business environment and ensuring their benefits reach ordinary citizens.

 

FBR Chairman Muhammad Rashid Langrial said strengthening the professional capabilities of tax officials through modern training is vital for building a more effective, transparent, and efficient tax system in Pakistan.
