Gold prices moved higher on Wednesday as investors focused on the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision, while easing oil prices provided some support to the precious metal.
Spot gold rose 0.8% to $4,328.39 per ounce by 0310 GMT, recovering from a more than one-month low reached on Monday.
US gold futures for December delivery, however, declined 0.9% to $4,369.50 per ounce.
Markets are closely watching the Federal Reserve’s decision for signals on the future path of interest rates. Expectations of a rate hike have largely been reflected in market pricing.
Lower interest rates generally support gold because they reduce the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding asset, while higher rates can put pressure on prices.
Persistent concerns over government fiscal positions are also supporting demand for gold, according to Commerzbank.
Meanwhile, other precious metals also gained, with silver and palladium rising more than 1% each.
Investors are now awaiting the Fed’s policy announcement for further clues on interest rates and the broader outlook for precious metals.
