Gold steadies as markets await key US payrolls data

Gold prices remained largely unchanged on Friday, holding near elevated levels as investors awaited closely watched U.S. payrolls data that could provide further signals on the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision.

Spot gold stood at $4,477.10 per ounce at 0211 GMT and was on track to post a modest weekly gain. The precious metal had surged 2% in the previous session after traders reduced expectations of a September interest rate hike.

The shift in sentiment followed comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, who indicated support for keeping interest rates unchanged if inflationary pressures continue to ease.

Market attention is now firmly focused on the upcoming U.S. employment report, which could influence expectations surrounding the Fed's monetary policy path.
