Apna Ghar Scheme Targets 150,000 Homes by June 2027

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said the federal government has allocated Rs71 billion in subsidies for the Prime Minister's Apna Ghar Scheme under the FY27 budget, with a target of financing 150,000 homes by June 2027.

Speaking at a media briefing, SBP Executive Director for Islamic Finance, Ghulam Muhammad Abbasi, said the scheme is designed to ease Pakistan's housing shortage by providing affordable financing to low- and middle-income households. He acknowledged that progress has been slower than expected but said the central bank and participating financial institutions are working to accelerate loan disbursements.

Since the programme's launch, banks have disbursed Rs27 billion in housing loans. As of June 30, 2026, cumulative housing finance had reached Rs293 billion, benefiting 65,414 borrowers, with commercial banks accounting for Rs262 billion and microfinance banks Rs36.1 billion.

Abbasi said the scheme has received around 107,000 applications, of which 27,000 have been approved, while 13,000 were rejected mainly due to loan defaults, weak credit histories, or applicant withdrawals. The remaining applications are under review.

Eligible applicants, including CNIC, NICOP, and POC holders, can obtain financing of up to Rs10 million to purchase or construct a home. Loans are available for properties of up to 250 square yards or apartments of up to 1,500 square feet, with a repayment period of 20 years and a fixed 5% markup for the first 10 years.

The SBP also announced that banks have been directed not to charge processing fees and to decide loan applications within 15 days. An online application portal has been launched, while a dedicated housing finance helpline is expected to become operational soon. Borrowers will also be able to repay loans early without incurring any prepayment penalty.
