Silk Road Fund Eyes Expanded Investment Opportunities in Pakistan

Pakistan is seeking to deepen investment cooperation with China’s Silk Road Fund (SRF), with the Chinese investment institution expressing interest in exploring additional opportunities across key sectors of the economy.

Federal Finance and Revenue Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met a high-level SRF delegation led by Chairperson Zhu Jun in Islamabad to discuss potential investments and ways to strengthen economic ties between Pakistan and the fund.

During the meeting, Aurangzeb highlighted recent improvements in Pakistan’s fiscal position, external account stability, foreign exchange reserves and broader macroeconomic conditions. He said the government remains focused on maintaining economic stability while advancing structural reforms and sustainable growth.

The minister outlined ongoing efforts to increase domestic revenue mobilisation, expand the tax base, digitalise tax administration and address structural weaknesses in the energy sector. He also stressed the government’s focus on export-led growth and improving the business environment to attract private investment.

Discussions covered opportunities linked to Pakistan’s privatisation programme as well as potential investments in infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and private-sector development. Aurangzeb said stronger participation from international institutional investors could support capital formation and productive economic activity.

The SRF delegation welcomed Pakistan’s recent economic progress and expressed interest in expanding its engagement with the country. Zhu Jun said the fund had been impressed by several private-sector projects it had reviewed and highlighted the capabilities and potential of Pakistan’s private sector.

The fund is particularly interested in opportunities involving infrastructure, energy, private-sector projects and initiatives with wider economic and social benefits. Discussions also focused on Pakistan’s power-sector reforms, including transmission, distribution and measures aimed at improving efficiency and attracting new investment.

Aurangzeb encouraged closer coordination between Pakistani authorities, domestic businesses and the Silk Road Fund to identify commercially viable projects and advance areas of mutual interest.

The meeting signals continued Chinese institutional interest in Pakistan as the government seeks to attract long-term foreign capital and accelerate investment across strategic sectors.
