Pakistan’s inaugural Sustainable Panda Bond has received international recognition after winning the Pioneer Sustainable Sovereign Panda Bond Issuer Award at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Climate Bonds Awards.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the award reflects Pakistan’s expanding access to international capital markets, stronger financial partnerships and efforts to diversify its sustainable financing sources.
The CNY 1.75 billion bond, issued in May 2026, has a three-year maturity and carries a 2.5% coupon. According to Finance Ministry adviser Khurram Schehzad, investor demand exceeded the issue size by more than five times.
The transaction enabled Pakistan to tap a new pool of institutional investors through China’s onshore capital market while strengthening financial ties with Chinese investors and institutions.
The bond was arranged through collaboration between the Government of Pakistan, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Chinese authorities, financial advisers and underwriters.
The recognition marks a milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to broaden its investor base and diversify sovereign financing sources while mobilising funds for sustainable development.
