Pakistan and Google have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting the country’s ambition to develop a $30 billion digital economy, with a focus on artificial intelligence, digital skills, education, payments and technology-driven government transformation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the signing ceremony and welcomed a high-level Google delegation to Pakistan.
Under the agreement, Pakistan and Google will explore several initiatives, including Google Career Certificates, access to Gemini AI tools for students, an AI Centre of Excellence in Islamabad, mobile application and gaming accelerators, digital payment solutions and AI-based transformation of government services.
Google also plans to issue 150,000 career certificates during 2026, while the partnership includes one-year subscriptions to Gemini AI Plus and Gemini Notes for students.
The two sides will also examine the use of AI infrastructure and technology solutions across key sectors. One proposed area is the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), where AI-driven data analytics and process automation could support the government’s ongoing FBR transformation programme.
Google’s Cluster Director for Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, Farhan Qureshi, said the company intends to deepen its engagement with Pakistan following the recent establishment of its local office and support the country’s digital economy ambitions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the agreement as an important milestone in Pakistan’s partnership with Google, stressing the need to equip the country’s young population with modern technology and digital skills.
He said the collaboration comes at a crucial time as Pakistan is undertaking digital transformation across multiple sectors, particularly governance.
The MoU was signed by Zarrar Hasham Khan, Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, and David Wheeler, Google’s Head of Public Policy for Southeast Asia and South Asia.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Google Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy Wilson White, US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
