Electricity consumers are likely to face an additional Rs29.5 billion burden under the proposed Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for August 2026, with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) considering an increase of Rs1.73 per unit.
Nepra concluded a hearing on a petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) seeking the tariff adjustment and reserved its decision. The regulator will issue its final determination after reviewing the financial data and calculations submitted during the hearing.
According to CPPA officials, around Rs20.714 billion of the proposed adjustment relates directly to payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Total electricity generation in August stood at 14.464 billion units, with an average generation cost of Rs8.82 per unit. Hydropower accounted for the largest share of generation at 37.84%, followed by imported coal at 15.59%, local coal at 10.86%, LNG at 8.48% and local gas at 7.04%.
LNG-based generation was the most expensive component of the fuel mix, with its cost reaching as high as Rs45.92 per unit.
Several power producers submitted adjustment claims during the proceedings, including Rs1.32 billion from Chashma Nuclear Power Plant C2, Rs528.1 million from Tavanir Iran, Rs183.8 million from Punjab Thermal Power and Rs159 million from Thar Coal Block-I Power Generation Company.
Other claims included adjustments from Nishat Power, Engro Powergen Thar, Narowal Energy and Lucky Electric Power. A provisional adjustment of Rs10.62 billion for July and August was also included for RLNG-based power plants.
However, the proposed increase was partly offset by reductions in other accounts, including a Rs10.74 billion decrease in July 2026 actualisation figures and a Rs2.23 billion reduction related to June 2026.
Port Qasim Electric Power Company also reported a Rs113.5 million reduction, while savings adjustments for Uch Power were reduced by Rs86.1 million.
The final impact on electricity consumers will be determined once Nepra issues its detailed decision.
