Iran has conveyed conditions to the United States for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media, following a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting took place on Tuesday, with Iranian officials outlining several demands linked to the reopening of the strategic waterway.
According to state media, Iran is seeking the immediate lifting of the naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and an end to the war across all “resistance” fronts.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route through which a significant share of international oil and gas shipments passes. Any prolonged disruption could therefore continue to affect crude prices, shipping activity and energy-importing economies.
The discussions come as regional tensions remain elevated and markets closely monitor developments around the strait for signs of a potential reopening and restoration of normal maritime traffic.
