HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) have expanded their Climate-Smart Agri-Financing initiative to farmers across Punjab, using satellite data and technology-based risk assessment to improve agricultural lending.
The collaboration has moved beyond its pilot phase into a province-wide implementation, targeting Punjab because of its importance to Pakistan’s agricultural economy.
Under the partnership, HBL Microfinance Bank will use satellite imagery, crop monitoring and remote-sensing analytics provided by Suparco to strengthen its assessment of agricultural land, crop conditions and farm-level risks.
The initiative is designed to provide the bank with more reliable information when making lending decisions while improving monitoring of financed farms and strengthening the resilience of its agricultural loan portfolio.
HBL Microfinance Bank President and CEO Amir Khan said farmers are increasingly exposed to unpredictable weather, water shortages and other climate-related risks that can affect both their livelihoods and Pakistan’s food security.
He said integrating satellite intelligence into agricultural financing would allow the bank to better assess conditions on the ground and make lending decisions that are more timely and aligned with farmers’ circumstances.
Suparco Member of the Space Application and Research Wing Zafar Iqbal said the organisation has more than three decades of experience in agricultural monitoring, supported by around 35 years of spatial data archives and analytical outputs.
Suparco has also developed machine-learning and deep-learning models through a Geo-AI-enabled platform to generate agricultural intelligence. These capabilities are being combined with its Space4Climate initiative, which provides risk assessments for climate-related hazards including floods, droughts and hailstorms.
The partnership will use this data to support HBL MfB’s agricultural lending system through farm-level risk assessment, more informed credit decisions and post-loan monitoring.
Suparco will also make agricultural intelligence available to the public through its Space4Climate portal, with the aim of improving awareness and strengthening climate resilience across Pakistan’s farming sector.
The two organisations said the collaboration will combine Suparco’s satellite and remote-sensing capabilities with HBL Microfinance Bank’s field network and agricultural financing expertise to develop a more data-driven and climate-resilient lending model.
The initiative is expected to improve access to agricultural finance while helping lenders better understand climate and crop-related risks faced by farmers.
