PM welcomes Rs3bn export insurance initiative to support SMEs

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the launch of an export insurance facility by the Export Development Fund (EDF) and Export-Import Bank of Pakistan, saying the initiative will help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) expand their export activities.

Chairing a meeting on the EDF, the prime minister said the Rs3 billion Risk Pool would improve access to export credit insurance, particularly for SMEs, and support businesses in increasing their export volumes.

He described the initiative as an important step towards strengthening small and medium-sized businesses and supporting broader economic growth.

The prime minister said the EDF had undergone restructuring and reforms, following which its leadership had been placed in the hands of private-sector professionals. He added that the funds available with the organisation were being directed towards initiatives aimed at facilitating the business community.

Shehbaz Sharif said the government's measures were focused on developing an export-led economy and strengthening Pakistan's position as a potential global investment destination.

During the meeting, the prime minister was briefed on the EDF's restructuring and reform programme. Officials said the entire Rs24 billion available with the fund had been allocated for investment to support businesses.

The meeting was informed that the EDF would not incur additional expenditure on infrastructure. Instead, its resources would be directed towards research, skills development and initiatives aimed at improving competitiveness and supporting economic growth.

Officials also briefed the meeting on efforts to extend Pakistan's GSP+ preferential trade arrangement, which would help preserve the country's preferential access to European markets.

The government expects the export insurance facility and other EDF initiatives to strengthen business confidence, particularly among SMEs, and contribute to the expansion of Pakistan's export base.
