The federal government is considering phasing out the Rs10 banknote, while the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) works on redesigned currency featuring stronger security measures.
SBP officials told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that the proposed changes are part of a broader currency redesign. The Rs5,000 and Rs1,000 notes are also being redesigned, with officials saying the new banknotes will incorporate additional security features.
Officials noted that producing a Rs5,000 or Rs1,000 banknote currently costs around Rs14 per note, while the Rs10 denomination is being reviewed partly because of its relatively high production cost.
The new currency designs have reportedly been submitted to a Cabinet subcommittee for approval, with the final designs still under consideration.
During the committee meeting, lawmakers criticised the lengthy process of designing and issuing the new notes and questioned whether the central bank could use modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, to accelerate the process.
The committee also raised concerns about counterfeit detection and delays in finalising the new banknotes.
Once approved, the redesigned notes are expected to feature enhanced security measures aimed at improving protection against counterfeiting.
