Gold prices extended their recent rally on Tuesday, reaching their highest level in more than three months as investors increased demand for the precious metal ahead of key US inflation data and a closely watched speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh.
Spot gold gained 0.4% to $4,668.19 per ounce by 0146 GMT, after touching its highest level since May 14 earlier in the session. US gold futures also advanced 0.6% to $4,724.50.
Analysts attributed the latest gains to renewed concerns over currency debasement following the US Treasury’s announcement last week that it would double the size of its liquidity-support buyback operations for longer-dated government securities.
According to IG market analyst Tony Sycamore, the renewed “debasement trade” has provided further momentum to gold, with buying interest expected to remain strong during price dips. He sees potential for gold to move towards the $4,900-$5,000 resistance zone.
TD Securities also said concerns over US dollar debasement could continue supporting gold prices in the coming weeks, particularly as the Federal Reserve has yet to provide a clear indication that it is prepared to aggressively address higher inflation.
However, the outlook for interest rates remains an important factor for bullion. Since gold does not generate interest income, higher rates can reduce its appeal by increasing the opportunity cost of holding the metal.
Markets are closely watching Warsh’s first major address at the annual Jackson Hole conference later this week for clues about the recent rise in bond yields and the Federal Reserve’s policy direction. Investors will also focus on the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, due Wednesday.
Geopolitical tensions are providing another source of support. Iran has vowed to respond to expanded US economic sanctions designed to pressure its economy, while Tehran remains confident that key trading partners will resist Washington’s pressure campaign.
Other precious metals also moved higher. Spot silver rose 0.3% to $69.16 per ounce, platinum gained 0.4% to $1,883.93, while palladium increased 0.2% to $1,359.
