Pakistan Steps Up Tehran Diplomacy as US-Iran Tensions Persist

Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic efforts to promote peace between the United States and Iran, with Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi holding talks with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Tehran.

 

The discussions focused on regional stability and diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

 

The visit comes as Washington prepares to introduce additional economic measures targeting Iran and countries that continue to maintain economic relations with Tehran. Pakistan’s military said Field Marshal Munir’s visit was aimed at supporting a “peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution” to the conflict.

 

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the talks took place following the Pakistani delegation’s arrival in Tehran and formed part of Islamabad’s broader diplomatic engagement aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.

 

Pakistan has maintained contacts with both Washington and Tehran in an effort to facilitate a long-term settlement following an interim understanding reached between the two sides in June. Pakistani sources cited by Reuters said US President Donald Trump also spoke with Field Marshal Munir before his Tehran visit, with Washington reportedly encouraging Pakistan to use its influence to bring Iran back to negotiations.

 

Meanwhile, the United States has warned countries against providing economic support to Iran as Washington prepares further sanctions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was expected to announce additional measures targeting Tehran.

 

Iran has responded by warning that continued economic pressure could prompt it to disrupt oil exports from the Gulf, potentially creating further risks for global energy supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The diplomatic push follows the June 18 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a 60-day framework for Washington and Tehran to work towards a broader agreement covering Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

 

Although direct military confrontations have eased in recent weeks, formal negotiations between the two countries have yet to fully resume.

 

Pakistan has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy, saying it is using both direct and indirect channels to encourage Washington and Tehran to return to the negotiating table and pursue a sustainable resolution.
