ISLAMABAD: In a significant boost to Pakistan’s upstream energy sector, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a fresh oil and gas discovery at its Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well in District Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with test flows of 3,765 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 11.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas.

The discovery was made in the Lockhart Limestone formation during a cased-hole Drill Stem Test (DST-05), where the well flowed through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead flowing pressure of 4,080 psig — indicating strong reservoir potential.

OGDC, the operator of the Nashpa Exploration Licence with a 65 per cent working interest, disclosed the find to the Pakistan Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. Its joint venture partners include Pakistan Petroleum Limited (30 per cent) and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (5.0 per cent carried interest).

Spudded on December 30, 2024, Baragzai X-01 (Slant) was drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres into the Kingriali Formation to test multiple hydrocarbon-bearing horizons, including Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta and Kingriali formations.

Notably, prior cased-hole drill stem tests in Kingriali, Datta, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Hangu and Lumshiwal formations had also resulted in oil and gas discoveries, underscoring the multi-layered potential of the block.
