Pakistan’s cotton arrivals increased 19% YoY to 2.389 million bales by September 15, strengthening expectations that this season’s production could exceed 6 million bales, according to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).
Arrivals in Punjab reached 860,942 bales, up 24.7% YoY, while Sindh recorded 1.528 million bales, an increase of 16.3%. The latest figures compare with total arrivals of 2.004 million bales during the same period last year.
Cotton Ginners Forum Chairman Ihsanul Haq said the improved arrivals reflected favourable crop conditions and could take national production above 6 million bales, compared with around 5.5 million bales last year.
Sindh continues to lead production, with Sanghar alone recording 888,607 bales by September 15—more than the combined Punjab arrivals. Haq also pointed to the continued expansion of sugarcane cultivation in Punjab as a factor affecting cotton acreage.
Textile mills had purchased around 2.035 million bales, while exporters bought 93,000 bales, leaving roughly 261,000 bales with ginners. A total of 205 ginning units were operating in Punjab and 207 in Sindh.
However, significant differences remain between official production estimates. PCGA reported Punjab arrivals at 860,942 bales by September 15, while the Punjab Crop Reporting Service reported 1.483 million bales by September 17.
Analysts said the crop remains in a critical phase, with pink bollworm identified as the key threat alongside whitefly, jassid and other pests. Rainfall, timely picking and lint quality will also determine the final output.
Meanwhile, domestic cotton prices declined by around Rs1,000 per maund during the past week to approximately Rs18,600 in Punjab and Rs18,400 in Sindh. Lower Brazilian cotton prices have also reportedly encouraged some textile mills to increase imports.
Despite price pressures and crop risks, industry experts said favourable weather and improved crop conditions could make the current season one of the strongest in recent years.
