Federal Government Debt Rises by Rs37.3trn During Shehbaz’s Two Tenures

The federal government’s debt increased by Rs37.307 trillion over nearly three years and nine months covering Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s first and current terms, according to State Bank of Pakistan data.
 
The increase compares with a Rs18.323 trillion rise recorded during a similar period under the PTI government, meaning the increase during Shehbaz Sharif’s two tenures was around 104% higher based on the cited figures.
 
SBP data shows federal government debt rose by Rs18.764 trillion between April 2022 and July 2023 during Shehbaz Sharif’s first tenure, which lasted 16 months.
 
During the first 29 months of his current tenure, from March 2024 to July 2026, federal government debt increased by another Rs18.543 trillion.
 
The data shows that federal government debt stood at Rs43 trillion in March 2022, the final month of the PTI government. It rose to Rs61.777 trillion by July 2023 and reached Rs83.883 trillion by July 2026.
 
Before the PTI government took office, federal government debt stood at Rs24.69 trillion.
