WAPDA says Sindh disburses Rs7.7bn for K-IV project

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water Resources reviewed progress on Karachi's K-IV water supply project, expressing concern over delays and urging authorities to expedite its completion.

During the meeting, WAPDA Chairman Muhammad Saeed said funding constraints had slowed the project but noted that the Sindh government has released Rs7.7 billion, allowing work to move forward.

Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Moeen Wattoo said the federal government has spent Rs86 billion on the project so far, with an additional Rs70 billion required to complete it. He added that around 66% of the project has been completed.

The minister clarified that WAPDA's role is limited to delivering water to Karachi, while the Sindh government is responsible for developing the city's distribution network, estimated to cost around Rs200 billion. He said the province is seeking World Bank financing for the distribution system.

WAPDA expects the K-IV project to be completed by June 2027, subject to timely funding. Once operational, the scheme is expected to supply 260 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Karachi.

The committee also reviewed the proposed WAPDA Security Force Bill, 2026, discussed flood preparedness, and decided to hold its next meeting in Karachi to assess the project's on-ground progress.
