Port Qasim has begun a multi-billion-dollar transformation plan aimed at turning Pakistan's second-largest commercial port into a modern maritime and logistics hub, with around $2 billion in new investment expected from the UAE, Türkiye, Qatar and China.
A key component of the initiative is a $250 million dredging project, now in its first phase, which will gradually increase channel depth and allow larger vessels with up to an 18-metre draft to berth at the port. Authorities expect the upgrade to significantly boost cargo-handling capacity and improve operational efficiency.
The port is also strengthening its role in the Reko Diq mining project, with Reko Diq Mining Company committing $150 million in investment. Construction has already started on rail infrastructure linking the mining site to Port Qasim for future mineral exports.
Under the ML-1 railway project, a new rail line is being developed between Pipri and Port Qasim, while a logistics corridor involving rail, road and sea transport is planned to streamline cargo movement across the country. Officials say the project will reduce freight congestion on Karachi's major roads and lower transportation costs.
A railway freight container and multi-logistics park is also under development through a partnership between NLC and DP World, with an investment of Rs2.46 billion. The facility is expected to handle hundreds of containers and trucks simultaneously and ease pressure on Karachi's transport network.
According to Port Qasim Authority Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Moazzam Ilyas, the port has expanded from a single berth in 1980 to 18 berths and now serves as a key hub for LNG, LPG and petroleum imports. Additional terminals and berths are currently under construction.
The government has also granted Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status to Port Qasim to attract industrial investment, encourage value-added manufacturing and boost exports.
Officials expect several major projects to be completed over the next two years, positioning Port Qasim as a key gateway for Pakistan's trade and industrial growth.
